Choosing a Wedding Supplier - Updated for 2024

Planning a wedding can be pretty overwhelming and with such an insane amount of choice out there these days it can be tricky knowing where to start when it comes to choosing your suppliers. From cake makers to venues and everywhere in between - we reckon there are certain rules of thumb that apply to picking all your key wedding suppliers. Your wedding day is possibly THE most important day you'll ever plan so you need to make sure you're in good hands and in doing so you will relieve yourselves of SO much stress and extra work - trust us!

So with this in mind what are our top tips on choosing those key suppliers:

Ask Questions

Don't be afraid to ask TONS of questions. Companies that are passionate about what they do will happily talk until the cows come home about their area of expertise. Ask about their backgrounds, their company ethos, past weddings and events they have been involved, any stumbling blocks they have encountered, back up plans they have in place, why they do what they do, what their favourite gin is (who cares? just ask!)

Then ask yourself an important questions- does this company seem professional, experienced, reliable, credible and so on. Most importantly do you trust them to play a big part in your day?

Seek Testimonials

Testimonials tend to be readily available online but if not ask to see some. Established suppliers will have a wealth of feedback to share with you - especially from clients themselves - not just fellow suppliers and industry friends. A lot of suppliers may even go that one step further and put you in touch with past clients who are willing to share their experience of that company. What better peace of mind than to chat to someone who's been in your position and allowed a company to play a huge part in their wedding day.

Go with Your Gut

Naturally you'll spend more time liaising with some suppliers than others, probably depending mostly on what aspect of your day it is that they're involved in. Based on this, go with the people you enjoyed chatting to or spending time with and the company you feel you'd feel most comfortable working with. Go with your gut on this - if there's something that doesn't quite feel right then trust your instincts.

Don't Base Your Decision Purely on Price

One of the first things we suggest doing when starting your wedding planning is to set budgets, so we really do understand the importance of budgeting and not letting costs spiral out of control. That said, it is so so important not to choose your suppliers based purely on cost. If something seems too good to be true - sadly it probably is.

We're not suggesting that the most expensive supplier is the best or that the cheapest will go out of business and leave you stranded before your big day, but choose carefully and consider the points above for all your suppliers.

Be Clear on Where You Stand

Nobody wants to plan a wedding with the possibility of having to rearrange or cancel looming over them, but the events of the last few years have highlighted the importance of knowing where you stand if you need to do so. Chat to your suppliers about their terms and procedures should you need to rethink your plans (for whatever reason). All experienced suppliers will have clear terms in place and should be happy to share these with you in black and white. Being clued up on this will give you some peace of mind throughout your planning process.
